D-Diet Application
Dialysis Diet Charts

HAVE YOUR DIALYSIS DIET UNDER CONTROL!

Are you a patient attending haemodialysis?
Have you got problems with following your prescribed dialysis diet and/or fluid intake?

If you answer “Yes” to either of these questions then the following application is exactly for you!

You will constantly have in sight what you can still afford
to eat/drink until your next dialysis.

Dialysis diet

Target users

The application is intended for dialysed patients treated by haemodialysis to make it easier for them to follow their prescribed dialysis diet and it provides continuous indicative overview of intake of fluids and potassium and phosphorus contained in their consumed food.

Free version

Free version allows you to continuously enter consumed foods and drinks and to monitor indicative values of consumed amounts of fluids, potassium, and phosphorus based on these inputs. You can look up the amounts of monitored substances in each foodstuff in an offline table. A daily list of food consumed is also available.

Premium version

In the Premium version you can add more items (which are not included in the table). You can also create and save your own dishes consisting of multiple items for easier future use. Consumption history can be retrieved as well. Now also with the option to export consumed items to Excel.

This app has 3 main modes of use:

Offline table of foodstuffs and their values

This app contains an extensive table of (more than 600) foodstuffs and drinks including their respective values of monitored contained minerals and water. You can search this table (by full text search) for required foodstuffs and drinks. Items that should be watched due to their high contents of potassium and/or phosphorus are color-coded. The table can also be sorted (both in ascending and descending order) by minerals contents (potassium, phosphorus).

So it is a useful offline aid which can help you get oriented in the plentiful quantity of foodstuffs that is always available for you.

Monitoring inter-dialysis fluid intake

Another simple step how to further use this app is easy monitoring the fluid intake. Just enter all you drink using the drink icon (bottom of the main screen) and you will constantly see the current amount of water in your body and how much you can still afford to drink until your next dialysis.
If you wish to simply enter just plain water and not bother by all the variety of other drinks it is quite easy as water is always on top of the table. However, if you decide to choose one and each particular drink from the table the app will also calculate the amount of potassium and/or phosphorus contained in each drink (as some commercial drinks contain various additives of different chemical composition).

Complete monitoring of fluid and mineral intake between 2 dialysis sessions

And finally, if you wish to use this app fully it is necessary to enter everything you eat and drink. Since today everybody has their smartphone at hand all the time it is not a problem at all. Just look up the required foodstuff or drink from the table (using full text search) and the app will take care of everything else.
In the Daily list below the table you can then view what have you consumed on any particular day.
All the monitored values are conveniently displayed in charts on the main screen.

Easy tool to help you follow your uneasy dialysis diet

This app is a useful tool that can help you keep a continuous overview of water and substances received between two dialysis sessions. Thanks to simple charts you will have a better idea of what is your current situation and what and how much you can afford to eat and drink before next dialysis. The amount of fluids is calculated from food as well which is often forgotten. Just input every food and drink consumed to this app.

Checking the values

The app can also be used in a passive way to look up the monitored values contained in individual foodstuffs. Each item shows the contents of potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and water.

Tip: Do you want to know which fruit has the smallest amount of potassium? Display the foods table (Consumption menu) and use the filter

Fluid intake

You can also use the app just to watch your intake of fluids. For this purpose you can use the drink icon on the dashboard which is linked with the list of drinks.

Here is the summary of maximum and optimum values used for calculations. The values are recalculated with regard to time period between one’s two successive dialysis sessions set up in app’s parameters.

Water

The initial value for calculations of fluid amounts is patient’s dry weight.

As a maximum amount of fluid intake is considered the maximum allowed ultrafiltration during dialysis that should not exceed 900 millilitres per hour.

As a second parameter we consider the maximum recommended patient’s weight gain which should not exceed 5% of one’s dry weight.

The lower of these two values is then used to set one’s maximum limit of fluid intake between two dialysis sessions.

The optimum limit (green numbers) is set to 1 liter of fluids per day plus one’s residual diuresis.

Potassium

The maximum limit of one’s potassium intake is based on patient’s residual diuresis. 3 categories with respective maximum value of potassium have been set up based on residual diuresis. These values are then recalculated for the time period between one’s two successive dialysis sessions.

The optimum values (green numbers) are again set to 70% of the maximum limit.

Phosphorus

In case of phosphorus we take into consideration if the patient is taking phosphate binders or not. Patients using phosphate binders have their optimum limit for phosphorus intake somewhat less strict.

Daily List
– Daily overview of your consumption

Below the food table you will find a Daily List bar. By tapping on the bar you can view the Daily list containing the items that you have consumed on the particular day. By tapping the calendar icon you can choose a different day and view/edit the items entered on that day. A dot at a particular date indicates that a consumption input was made on that day.

Premium version

The Premium version (for one-time payment of 4.90 Euro) allows creating custom composed dishes for easier input of repeated meals (Dishes tab in Consumption menu). If you repeatedly eat a certain meal consisting of multiple items you can define it and save it and next time instead of searching for each item of this dish in the table you just input the whole dish saved under your custom name.

This version also allows adding new items into the table (Foods tab in Consumption menu).

Have you recently received poor blood test results and aren’t sure where you may have made a dietary mistake? Thanks to a new app feature, you can download a list of consumed foods and drinks—along with the relevant values of monitored substances (K, P, H₂O)—from your Daily List into an Excel sheet. You can then share this sheet with your nephrologist for assessment.

Simply select a time period in the Daily List calendar for which you want to create the list and save it to a chosen location on your phone. From there, you can send it to your doctor by email or by other means.
